Scottie Lee Jacobs, 55, of Oceana, WV passed away on Thursday June 21, 2018 at Trinity Healthcare of
Mingo, Williamson, WV. He was born on December 21, 1962 in Summerset, KY a son of Anna Mae Phelps
Bowman and the late Edward Jacobs. He is preceded in death by his father. In addition to his mother he is
survived by a sister Charlotte Ann (Charlie) Combs of Donald, SC; two brothers Allen (Sherri) Jacobs of
Pikeville, KY and Charles Lee Loren (Michelle) Bowman of Oceana; two nieces Abby Combs of Donald, SC
and Chloe Waldroop of Columbia, MS; a nephew Zac Combs of Donald, SC; and a host of other loving family
and friends. In keeping with his wishes he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later

Johnny Roberts, 70, of Laurel Branch, WV, passed away on Tuesday June 26, 2018 at his home. He was
born on April 3, 1948 in Laurel Branch, WV a son of the late Troy and Nannie Neace Roberts. He attended
the Advent Christian Church of Clear Fork, a 1968 graduate of Baileysville High School and a member the
UMWA. He dearly loved his wife, daughters, grandsons and son-in-law.  In addition to his parents he is
preceded in death by four sisters Sarah Cook, Margaret Brooks, Mary Toler and Rosalie Toler; and three
brothers Sim, Shelby and Freeman Roberts. Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years Gloria Mullins
Roberts; two daughters Nancy Roberts of the home and Beverly and husband Eddie Bee Aliff, Jr. of Laurel
Branch; two grandsons Thomas and Andrew Aliff all of Laurel Branch; two sisters Sheba Brooks of Glen

Martin and Evelyn Lenore Paynter Toler. Glenda is a member of the Campus Church of God. In addition to
her parents she is preceded in death by her daughter Teresa Gwen Daniels; four brothers Mark Toler,

Erma Jean Trent, 88, of Oceana, WV passed away on Tuesday June 19, 2018 at Princeton Community
Hospital. She was born January 12, 1930 in Harlan County, KY a daughter of the late Issac Newton and
Rosie Gertrude Ball Collins. Erma was a retired cook for the Wyoming County Board of Education, having
cooked at Baileysville High and Elementary, Long Branch, Huff Consolidated, Berlin McKinney and Road
Branch Schools. After retirement she worked for Hardees in Oceana making Biscuits. In addition to her
parents she is preceded in death by her husband James Edwin Trent; a daughter Brenda Carol Trent; two
sons James Elliott Trent and Jesse Lynn Trent; and three sisters Janorah Bowens, Ethan Marie Sparks and
Mennie Mayes; and two brothers Emmitt Collins and Warren G. Harding Collins, Erma was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include her loving son Elmo Johnson and wife Connie
of Daniels; three grandchildren Scotty E. Johnson and wife Alicia, Richard Elliott Johnson and wife Jessica

Patricia Karen "Patty" Adkins, 73, of Laurel Branch, WV, joined her Savior in Heaven on July 6, 2018 at
Raleigh General Hospital. Patty was born on December 26, 1944 in Landville, WV,  a daughter of the late
Burb Payne and Athlene Gay Davis Payne Southard. She was a member of the Big Cub Missionary Baptist
Church in Coal Mountain. She was talented at flower arranging and decorating, as well as many hobbies.
Patty was a 1962 graduate of Baileysville High School and retired from the Wyoming County Board of
Education as a cook at Coal Mountain and Baileysville Elementary and Middle Schools. She was a
kindhearted, generous of spirit and loved her Heavenly Father. In addition to her parents her sister Linda
Collings also preceded her in death. Patty leaves behind her beloved husband Wesley Adkins, whom she
married on January 25, 1964; a daughter Jennifer Harding of Kernersville, NC; a son John Adkins of Loris,
SC; one grandson Michael Adkins of Tampa, FL; two granddaughters Samantha Harding of Franklin, NC
and Amber Johnson of Loris, SC; three great granddaughters; a great grandson; two brothers James Payne

Haskell "Jimmy" Eplin, 81, of Davin, WV went home to be with the Lord on June 4, 2018 at Genesis Logan
Center following a long illness. He was born on July 25, 1936 in Branchland, WV to the late Haskel Eplin, Sr.
and Estylla Spears Eplin. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Sandra Johnson
"Tootie" Eplin; two sisters Betty Eplin and Linda McDaniels; and two brothers Paul and Greg. Jimmy loved
going to church and attended many churches but Cyclone Church of God was his home church. He also
enjoyed reading his bible, listening to preaching and gospel music. He was a member of the UMWA and
retired from the mining industry after 28 years. He was a United States Veteran having served as a Marine
in the Korean War. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Latha Lusk Eplin of five and half years, whom he
loved dearly; a son Timmy and Wife Shelia of Greenville; a brother Gary and wife Deanna of Davin; three

while surrounded by her family and friends at her home. She was born on October 13, 1938 in Cyclone a
daughter of the late Pierce and Mary Bailey Lusk. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her
husband of 56 years Paris Brown; father and mother-in-law Ashby and Lula Brown; three brothers Landon,
Lonnie and infant brother Jackie Lusk; eight brother-in-laws Donald, Verlin, Chelsie, Gary and infant
Charles Seldon Brown, Roy Lusk, Rubert Martin and Naamon Brown; five sister-in-laws Edith Lusk, Maxine

loved going to church, working in and around her house. She loved her pets that she had over the years. She

Jeffery David Laxton, 59, of Oceana, WV entered his heavenly home on August 8, 2018 at 4:04AM at CAMC
with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 13, 1958 in Mullens, WV a son of the late Franklin
Junior and Wilda Allen Laxton. Jeff is a 1977 graduate of Pineville High School. He had many
accomplishments throughout his life. He is a faithful member of the Lillyhaven Baptist Church. He was
owner and operator of Corner Auto Sales for 33 years and the Mountaineer Drag Way for 9 years. He was
the youngest Mayor of the town of Oceana in 1983 and 1984. He was also a member of the Jaycee's for
many years. Jeff was a big part of the Wyoming County Toy Fund. He had a heart of Gold, he was a loving
husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed Drag Racing, spending time with his family and
friends. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother Steve Laxton; infant brother James
Edward; grandmother Maggie Allen; mother-in-law Lois "Ruth" Lusk; father-in-law Freeman Lusk;

Helena Mae Toler Brown, 72, of  Kopperston, WV lost her courageous battle with lung cancer on Saturday

County, WV a daughter of the late Lonnie and Pearl Osborne Toler. Helena was a retired hairdresser and
used to play softball where she was the pitcher. She loved her family, cats and flowers. She was a 1964
graduate of Oceana High School and a member of Bible Baptist Church where she loved to sing, play her
guitar and taught the Beginners and Primary class as a teacher / aide. In addition to her parents she is
preceded in death by her husband and love of her life of 46 years Raymond D. Brown; infant son; a sister;

Shelba Jean Cook, 81, of  Briar Creek, WV passed away on Saturday August 11, 2018 at Raleigh General
Hospital, Beckley, WV. She was born on February 21, 1937 in Littwar, WV a daughter of the late Hobert and
Gracie Casteel Cook. Shelba attended several local churches. In addition to her parents she is preceded in
death by two brothers James "JW" Cook and Billy Cook; and two sisters Ruby Patrick and Loraine Mitchell.
Survivors include two sisters Betty Campbell of Kinnelon, NJ and JoAnn Collins of Williamson; a brother
Curtis Cook of DeSoto, MS; special nephew Jeffrey Patrick of Briar Creek; and a host of nieces, nephews
and other loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on Friday August 17th at the
Clear Fork Independent Church of God, Clear Fork, WV with Pastor Hannibal Blankenship, Jr. and Rev.
Tommy Knotts officiating. She will be laid to rest in Short Cemetery, Briar Creek, WV. Friends may gather

Ethel DeLong Osborne Workman, 78, of  Cyclone, WV passed away on Thursday August 16, 2018 at Trinity
Health Center, Logan, WV. She was born on March 21, 1940 in Vanlear, KY a daughter of the late George
and Maxie Collins DeLong.  Ethel was a beautician for over 30 years and loved to go shopping. In addition
to her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband Beecher Harold Osborne; her second husband
Junior Rush Workman; a son Gregory Alan "Sharky" Osborne; a grandson Billy Ray "Trey" Hurley; and a
brother George DeLong, Jr. Survivors include a daughter Cyndi Hurley of Logan County; two sons Bob
(Rosey) Osborne and Brian (Kim) Workman all of Cyclone; eight grandchildren Bobby Osborne, Jr., Tre'
Hurley, Ashley Toler, Kerri Short, Kate Godfrey, Baylee Hurley, Alyssa Hurley and Kelsey Osborne; nine
great grandchildren Hayden Godfrey, Harlow Osborne, Keelyn Osborne, Rian Osborne, Ashtyn Toler,
Mason Short, Grayson Short, Aubree Godfrey, and Wesley Godfrey; two sisters Innis (Roland) Osborne of
Gilman Bottom and Betty (Ray) Davis of Prestonsburg, KY; a brother Aaron (Anna Jean) DeLong of
Kopperston; her special caregivers Linda Workman and her granddaughter Kelsey Osborne both of Cyclone;
and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1PM on
Monday August 20th in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, WV with Rev. Algie Cook
